Young Russians Promote Friendship and Goodwill at the Olympic Games

Sochi, Russia - A team of Young Ambassadors for Peace from Moscow traveled to Sochi to spend Feb. 11 and 12, 2014 at the Olympic Games. They visited the Olympic sites, rooted for their athletes, communicated with guests from different countries and gave them matryoshkas (painted nesting dolls) as a token of friendship and peace. In addition, they engaged in their own athletic event: a “Run Hour,” a popular program of UPF-Russia in which people assemble in a public space to spend an hour running and distributing literature to promote a worthwhile cause. A team member, Maria Oleinikova, wrote her impressions about the trip.

UPF-Russia Honors UN Decade for the Rapprochement of Cultures

Moscow, Russia - About 95 people gathered for a conference on "Russia towards the UN International Decade for the Rapprochement of Cultures" held in Moscow’s National Hotel Dec. 21. Scholars, government officials and NGO leaders proposed ways to work together during the coming Year of Culture declared by the Russian Federation in a framework of promoting a culture of volunteerism, family culture and a culture of peace.

"Light of the Christmas Star" Festival Brings Musicians Together

The fifth annual “Light of the Christmas Star” festival/сompetition, Dec. 5 – 9, attracted participants from not only throughout Russia but also Finland, China and Brazil. Musicians and performers ranging from 5 to 87 years old assembled in St. Petersburg, Russia, and traveled from there to Finland and Sweden, where they gave concerts and made friends with local musicians.

Reflections on the Conference in Paris Promoting Eurasia-Europe Cooperation

Paris, France - I was walking along a street in the morning twilight, coming down a hill from the house where I was staying. I had an amazing view of the misty Paris from there and even saw the Eiffel tower poking through the mist. I took a deep breath as I passed by a bakery and got a lungful of the warm smell of fresh pastry. The day was going to be extremely interesting for me, as I had been selected to attend a two-day European Leadership Conference, Dec. 3-4, 2013, and was now heading to the hotel where it was to be held. The conference focused on the relations between Europe and Eurasia, a topic very interesting to me due to the border location of my home country, Finland, and the ever-so-reserved atmosphere towards our neighboring country, Russia.

Youth Volunteers as Peacebuilders in Europe and Eurasia

Paris, France - Youth delegations from Europe and Eurasia who had come to Paris for a European Leadership Conference also met separately to discuss youth volunteerism as a way to bring the two regions closer. The young delegates were participants in the conference entitled “Eurasia and Europe: Cooperating for a Culture of Peace and Human Development,” which was jointly organized by UPF and the Women’s Federation for World Peace on Dec. 3 and 4, 2013.

Promoting a Rapprochement of Cultures in Ukraine

Volunteers from Japan and South Korea visited Ukraine in November 2013 at the invitation of the Universal Peace Federation. The purpose of the delegation's stay in Ukraine was to take part in international volunteer activities, initiate charitable projects and meet volunteers in various cities of Ukraine. With the opening of the International Decade for the Rapprochement of Cultures (2013-2022) established by the UN General Assembly, the visit was also an opportunity to build bridges of friendship with students in many universities and participate in cultural events.

Washington DC, USA - The autumn Japanese Tea Ceremony was held at the UPF’s Peace Embassy in Washington, DC Nov. 21, 2013. Two sessions allowed a total of 60 diplomats including seven ambassadors from 26 embassies, Ambassadors for Peace, friends of UPF and the staff to enjoy either lunch or dinner despite their busy schedules.

Day of White Cranes Celebrated in Novosibirsk

Novosibirsk, Russia - The friendly staff of the Library for Family Readings in Novosibirsk arranged an unusual celebration of the White Crane Poetry Festival on Oct. 22. It was established by the national poet of Dagestan, Rasul Gamzatov (1923-2003), in memory of the soldiers who died on battlefields in all wars. The memorable meeting was attended by students, veterans, and mothers of dead soldiers.

A Tribute to Russian Poet Pushkin and Interracial Marriage

Novosibirsk, Russia - Across the street from the A.S. Pushkin Library in Novosibirsk, a bust of Pushkin was erected on Oct. 19 on the threshold of the UN International Decade for the Rapprochement of Cultures. At the ceremony, a Young Ambassador for Peace from Cameroon spoke about the value of interethnic and interracial marriages, using as an example Russia's greatest poet, whose great-grandfather was African.

Russians Gain Insights into Korean Culture and Character

Day of Peace Observed in Buenos Aires with Poetry Prizes and Tree Planting

Buenos Aires, Argentina -“Peace is a possible dream” was the desire and commitment expressed in different ways in the new edition of the International Day of Peace that the UPF Argentina celebrated with an artistic-cultural-interreligious event on September 22 at the Embassy for Peace (Buenos Aires), this year under the motto “Education for Peace.” Prizes were conferred on the winners of the fifth annual International Poetry contest on the theme “Universal love as a path towards peace,” that included 448 submissions from 30 countries. In addition, an olive tree as planted in Parque de los Patricios of Buenos Aires on September 21.
