Young Russians Promote Friendship and Goodwill at the Olympic Games

Sochi, Russia - A team of Young Ambassadors for Peace from Moscow traveled to Sochi to spend Feb. 11 and 12, 2014 at the Olympic Games. They visited the Olympic sites, rooted for their athletes, communicated with guests from different countries and gave them matryoshkas (painted nesting dolls) as a token of friendship and peace. In addition, they engaged in their own athletic event: a “Run Hour,” a popular program of UPF-Russia in which people assemble in a public space to spend an hour running and distributing literature to promote a worthwhile cause. A team member, Maria Oleinikova, wrote her impressions about the trip.

In his annual address to the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation on December 12, 2013, the Russian Federation President, Vladimir Putin, said that "the coming year of 2014 is declared in Russia the Year of Culture. It is intended to become a year of true enlightenment and appeal to our cultural roots, to the issues of patriotism, morality and ethics." People often speculate about cross-cultural differences, oblivious to the fact that culture is actually able to bring people together. Therefore, we must teach our citizens not just tolerance for people of different nationalities but also respect and providing equal opportunities for all citizens of our multinational country.

UPF-Russia Honors UN Decade for the Rapprochement of Cultures

Moscow, Russia - About 95 people gathered for a conference on "Russia towards the UN International Decade for the Rapprochement of Cultures" held in Moscow’s National Hotel Dec. 21. Scholars, government officials and NGO leaders proposed ways to work together during the coming Year of Culture declared by the Russian Federation in a framework of promoting a culture of volunteerism, family culture and a culture of peace.

Russia’s Kemerovo Region Promotes Volunteerism

Kemerovo, Russia - The competition "Kuzbass Volunteer 2013" was held in the Kemerovo region of southwest Siberia from Dec. 17 to 19, 2013. “Kuzbass” is short for Kuzneft Basin and is another term for Kemerovo, one of the largest coal-producing areas of the world. The competition was initiated by Natalia Filimonova and Oksana Kitova, leading experts of the regional Department for Youth and Sports.

Ural Students Bring Christmas Joy to Orphans

Yekaterinburg, Russia - Christmas and New Year’s Day are a special time of the year, combining spirituality and joy. Perhaps that is why so many people feel the need to help those who are in a difficult situation in December and January. Twenty-three students from the Ural Federal University visited an orphanage on Dec. 19 to bring Christmas joy to the children.

Nelson Mandela's Life Celebrated in Moscow

Moscow, Russia - On Dec. 15, 2013, when many people’s minds were drawn to the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa for the memorial service for Nelson Mandela Rolilahla – a man of global impact who in South Africa was called the father of the nation – UPF-Russia and the Youth Initiative Group gathered that evening in commemoration of Nelson Mandela. It was an opportunity for Russians to wholeheartedly offer gratitude, attention and respect to this great man.

"Light of the Christmas Star" Festival Brings Musicians Together

The fifth annual “Light of the Christmas Star” festival/сompetition, Dec. 5 – 9, attracted participants from not only throughout Russia but also Finland, China and Brazil. Musicians and performers ranging from 5 to 87 years old assembled in St. Petersburg, Russia, and traveled from there to Finland and Sweden, where they gave concerts and made friends with local musicians.

Youth Volunteers as Peacebuilders in Europe and Eurasia

Paris, France - Youth delegations from Europe and Eurasia who had come to Paris for a European Leadership Conference also met separately to discuss youth volunteerism as a way to bring the two regions closer. The young delegates were participants in the conference entitled “Eurasia and Europe: Cooperating for a Culture of Peace and Human Development,” which was jointly organized by UPF and the Women’s Federation for World Peace on Dec. 3 and 4, 2013.
