Toronto Conference on Educating for Peace

Toronto, Canada - UPF and the Women’s Federation for World Peace of Canada sponsored an educational conference to present wide-ranging lectures and discussions with a theme of "Stable Families Bring Prosperity, Peace, and Integrity to the Nation." More than 50 Ambassadors for Peace and delegates of diverse religions and cultures attended the Jan. 11 program with their families.

Washington DC Forum: Women’s Role in Syria’s Transition and Reconciliation

Washington DC, USA - With the Geneva II conference scheduled to convene in little more than a week’s time, the Washington DC Office of Peace and Security Affairs convened a forum on Jan. 15 on “Women’s Role in Syria’s Transition and Reconciliation.” Two papers were presented in absentia. They had been written for the forum by two European women, Anne-Marie Lizin and Patricia Lalonde, who are active in the arena of women’s rights and protections. The two authors attended the recent MEPI in Jerusalem and are leading the development of a UPF sponsored meeting of women in Geneva at the same time as the Geneva-II talks.

Vatican's Academy of Sciences Convenes Consultation on Syria

Vatican City – UPF's president Dr. Thomas G. Walsh, along with the secretary general of UPF-Argentina, Miguel Werner, were privileged to have been invited to attend and to offer support and encouragement to the great work the Vatican, under His Holiness Pope Francis, is doing to promote interfaith and to bring an end to the violence in Syria. They attended the Jan. 13, 2014 consultation "Syria: Can We Remain Indifferent?"

Year-End Gala in Buenos Aires: 'Share, Acknowledge and Celebrate'

Buenos Aires, Argentina - Under the motto “Share, acknowledge, and celebrate,” UPF-Argentina closed the activities of 2013 with a Dec. 20 dinner at the Peace Embassy in Buenos Aires, organized along with the Women’s Federation for World Peace of Argentina. It was an emotional reunion, with a familial and interreligious atmosphere, reuniting with old and new friends that were made during this intense year.

Jerusalem Conference Explores Options for Peace and Stability

Jerusalem, Israel - A special consultation bought together approximately 45 religious leaders, academics, civil society leaders, diplomats and Middle East experts from 22 countries to Jerusalem Dec. 19-22 to explore the theme “Interreligious and International Relations in the Middle East: Toward Peace and Stability.”

Sri Lanka Hosts Religious Youth Service Project

Nuwara-Eliya, Sri Lanka - International participants joined a Religious Youth Service project in Walapane, central Sri Lanka, Dec. 13-20, 2013. The service-learning experience included educational presentations, leadership development, learning about Sri Lanka's diverse religions, and constructing a floor for a village medical clinic.

Tallinn Peace Forum: Steps Toward Eurasian-European Cooperation

Tallinn, Estonia - UPF-Estonia held a Peace Forum in Tallinn on Dec. 14 under the topic of “Practical Steps towards Eurasian-European Cooperation and Mutual Prosperity - What Role Can the Baltic Countries Play?“ The event was part of the Baltic Dialogue Initiative, an ongoing project of UPF-Eurasia focused on the specific role of the Baltic countries in improving the relationship between Europe and the former Soviet republics.

Nelson Mandela's Life Celebrated in Moscow

Moscow, Russia - On Dec. 15, 2013, when many people’s minds were drawn to the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa for the memorial service for Nelson Mandela Rolilahla – a man of global impact who in South Africa was called the father of the nation – UPF-Russia and the Youth Initiative Group gathered that evening in commemoration of Nelson Mandela. It was an opportunity for Russians to wholeheartedly offer gratitude, attention and respect to this great man.
