The African continent faces many daunting challenges, from extreme poverty and environmental degradation to political instability and a crisis in providing basic education and health care. UPF addresses the challenges of good governance and post-conflict healing through both leadership development and grass-roots efforts.
The African Union declared 2010 the "Year of Peace and Hope in Africa." It also released an analysis of the state of peace and security on the continent.
