UN Remembers 9/11 Attacks on Tenth Anniversary

On September 9, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly convened for a special Commemoration of the 10th Anniversary of the attacks of 9/11. New York, USA - “Women and the World at a Turning Point”, a parallel event of the UN’s 55th Commission on the Status of Women was held at the Nigeria House on March 2. H.E. Mrs. Joy Ogwu, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the UN, alluded to recent dramatic events in North Africa and the Middle East and called on women to seize the moment and take leading roles during this time of radical changes towards a direction of peace and tolerance.

New York, USA - The Committee of Spirituality, Values and Global Concerns honored the UN’s designation of 2010 as the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures in a week-long program of events created to explore the UN's commitment to peaceful resolutions of international issues. The week included focused meditations, workshops, panel discussions, group interchanges, and cultural performances. In addition, it honored the final year of the Decade of a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World.

Africa Reshaping Global Agenda: Africa Day in New York City

New York, United States - In a speech delivered at the New York City celebrations of Africa Day, May 25, 2010, hosted by the African Union in partnership with the Universal Peace Federation, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that peace and sustainable development in Africa was one of the world body’s top priorities, and he outlined a major personal effort that takes him to the continent no less than three times in the coming weeks. New York, NY, USA - The Universal Peace Federation held its annual symposium to mark the United Nations International Day of Families May 17 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The event was sponsored by the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Guinea with co-sponsorship from the Permanent Missions of Kazakhstan, Nepal, Nigeria, Qatar, Sri Lanka, and Sudan.

Honoring a Legacy of Peace at the United Nations

New York, USA - The Universal Peace Federation hosted a ‘Legacy of Peace’ program at the UN March 18 to honor Hédi Annabi, the UN Chief of Mission recently killed with 100 other UN personnel in the Haiti earthquake, and seven other prominent individuals associated with UPF who recently passed away and whose lives were dedicated to peace.

New York, USA - “The Role of Women in Social Transformation” was the theme of a March 9 event hosted by the mission of Nigeria to the United Nations and organized by the Universal Peace Federation. Speakers noted improved status of women in Iraq and Sri Lanka and greater opportunities for women to participate in public life.

Mission of Qatar to the UN Hosts Tea Ceremony

New York, USA - Ambassadors from several nations gathered at the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations for an experience of the culture of peace through a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Tea Master Fumie Watanabe with the help of volunteers and staff from the UPF Office of UN and International Relations conducted the ceremony on November 4.
