Corocoro, Bolivia – About 150 participants joined UPF-Bolivia in the small town of Corocoro on the Andean Plateau, to celebrate the Global Day of Parents on June 3, 2024. The town is best known for its copper mines, and the event was held in the Corocoro Mining Workers Union Theater.
The program, on the theme “Mothers and Fathers: Builders of a Society of Peace,” highlighted the role of parents in raising their children to be responsible, altruistic citizens and peacemakers. Ms. Sabina Hilda Condori, representative to the National Chamber of Deputies, supported the event, along with several Bolivian ambassadors for peace.
To open the program, local indigenous leaders led the singing of the Bolivian national anthem.
The president of the Municipal Council of Corocoro, Hon. Isadora Mamani de Aquino, gave the opening remarks, explaining that this was the first time for a U.N.-designated International Day to be commemorated in the municipality.
Three presenters addressed the gathering. This first was Mr. Gustavo Mejía, national director of the Parents School, who addressed the event’s main theme, explaining that mothers and fathers are key players in building a peaceful society.
Dr. Melva Gamarra, a defender of human rights and a lawyer who specializes in juvenile restorative justice and family law, also affirmed the importance of family education and family stability.
Ms. Nely Almanza, secretary general of UPF-Bolivia, echoed their emphasis on the family as the school of love and center of peace.
Several families, some with as many as 10 children, were recognized for their successful parenting.
The Municipal Council of Corocoro thanked UPF-Bolivia for its efforts to build a culture of peace. Mayor Emilio Maldonado Flores presented each speaker with a beautiful souvenir: a miniature mining helmet made of copper.
