Moscow, Russia – Aspiring chess masters aged 4 to 10 took part in a rapid chess tournament called “White Chess Rook” in Moscow on January 20, 2024, at the Radost Children's Center. The event was organized by Dmitry Samko, chairman of UPF-Moscow, with the support of the Joy of Childhood organization. This tournament, held twice a year, has become a family event attracting young participants and helping to promote the game of chess, which enjoys continuous popularity in Russia.
Participants in the tournament represented various districts of Moscow and the Moscow region. For some, victories were long-awaited rewards, while for others they were an incentive to pursue further achievements in chess. All the young chess players were awarded commemorative medals and certificates. However, the main value of the tournament was the atmosphere of friendship, support and encouragement for the youngsters.
Chess provides children with the opportunity to develop creative thinking, look for non-standard and original solutions, and form their own strategies in the game. It contains elements of mathematics such as numbers, coordinates and logical operations. This interesting and challenging game helps develop math skills including analysis and problem solving. It helps children acquire patience, learn to focus, and find creative solutions to problems.
In addition, playing chess helps children develop social skills, including taking turns, playing by the rules, and learning self-respect as well as respect for others.
