Italian Interfaith Speakers Address Ethical Food Distribution

Rome, Italy – Striving to ensure global food security is an important aspect of peacebuilding. On December 4, 2024, UPF-Italy and the Interreligious Association for Peace and Development (IAPD) held a webinar on the theme "Ethics, Spirituality and Food Sustainability."

Mr. Michele Cavallotto, serving as moderator, opened the meeting by emphasizing the importance of cooperation among religions in addressing global food challenges. He highlighted inequality in food distribution and the need to restore a sense of altruism and solidarity.

Ms. Maria Gabriella Mieli of UPF-Italy introduced the guests: Prof. Vincenzo Sanasi d'Arpe, president of the UN World Food Program Italy; Rabbi Barbara Aiello; and Buddhist Monk Tenzin Khentse. Ms. Mieli also mentioned the importance of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly the goal of ending hunger.

Prof. Sanasi emphasized that everyone has the right to food, and the need to consider the principle of solidarity. He cited Pope Francis, stressing that food sustainability is linked to ethics and human dignity. The professor also described the work of the World Food Program, which has assisted 160 million people worldwide. He stressed the connection between hunger and peace.

Rabbi Aiello shared the meanings related to foods eaten during Jewish holidays. She spoke about how those holidays encourage environmental awareness and hospitality. She also mentioned the importance of respecting the dignity of those in need, and establishing a personal connection with them.

Monk Tenzin Kensei drew attention to the importance of ethical words and actions, linking food to spirituality and social responsibility. He talked about food waste and the need for change in the current economic model, which often leads to injustice and exploitation.

During the discussion, the panelists answered questions regarding strategies to address food inequality and the involvement of religions in the United Nations 2030 Agenda.  Prof. Sanasi explained that the World Food Program works to raise awareness and funds, while Rabbi Aiello and Monk Kensei focused on the importance of ethical education and individual awareness.

The webinar concluded with expressions of gratitude to the speakers and participants, and a commitment to continue working on issues of ethics and spirituality in the future.
