Lively Peace Road Walk Draws Diverse Crowd in Sri Lanka

Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka – Around 100 youth leaders, students, volunteers, and organizers from three countries across two continents gathered in the ancient town of Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka, on August 12, 2024 to launch a Peace Road event on the theme "Towards Peace and Reconciliation in Sri Lanka.” The event sought to inspire a spirit of unity and healing in a nation that has long grappled with the aftermath of conflict.

Polonnaruwa, a town steeped in history, was the perfect setting for this event. Once the royal capital of the Kingdom of Polonnaruwa, this ancient city is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It borders the Eastern and Northern Provinces of Sri Lanka, where the most intense conflict took place during the civil war of 1983 to 2009. The town is currently undergoing a major development project, initiated by former President Maithripala Sirisena (2015 to 2019), involving upgraded roads, electricity, agriculture, education, health, and the environment.

The former president of Sri Lanka, Hon. Maithripala Sirisena, graced the occasion as the chief guest, lending an air of solemnity and respect. The exciting and vibrant opening ceremony celebrated the diverse cultures and faiths of the participants. The traditional lighting of an oil lamp, symbolizing hope and enlightenment, was followed by prayers from representatives of different religious traditions.

Dr. Chula Senaratne, secretary general of UPF-Sri Lanka, warmly welcomed the participants with an inspiring speech.  His words were followed by messages from international guests, including Mrs. Ursula McLackland, secretary general of UPF-Asia-Pacific and Mr. Alvin Pang, coordinator of RYS Global, who delivered powerful messages of peace and action.

The peace walk, the centerpiece of the day’s events, began with former President Sirisena leading the enthusiastic participants. Walking together represented more than a physical journey; it was a manifestation of the collective desire for peace and reconciliation. The group of students, who represented the future leaders of the nation, chanted "Peace Road" and waved flags as they embarked on the 1.2-kilometer walk through the bustling streets of Polonnaruwa. The local police provided motorcycle escorts to lead the contingent.

The lively crowd was energized by stirring march music performed by a 24-member military band from the Cadet Academy. The upbeat tempo and the participants' vibrant energy created a festive mood that echoed through the streets.

Locals lined the streets, drawn by the message of peace on this beautiful sunny day. The sight of so many individuals united in pursuit of peace and harmony was a powerful reminder of the potential for positive change when people come together with a shared vision.

As the walk concluded, participants gathered around a stage to enjoy music from the military band and captivating cultural performances by a dance troupe, providing a joyful and celebratory end to the day’s events.
