Mullaitivu, Sri Lanka – Working with generous donors in Singapore, UPF-Sri Lanka brought food aid to 250 families affected by flooding in Mullaitivau, Sri Lanka, delivered on December 28, 2024. One month earlier, on November 27, Cyclone Fengal had swept across northeastern Sri Lanka, bringing floods that wreaked havoc, displacing families and disrupting livelihoods.
The project was jointly organized by UPF, the International Association of Youth and Students for Peace (IAYSP) and the Religious Youth Service (RYS) in Sri Lanka.
Dr. Chula Senaratne, secretary general of UPF-Sri Lanka, appealed to RYS alumni and well-wishers in Singapore, who launched a campaign to raise funds for flood victims. They were able to provide staple food items including rice, flour, canned fish and dhal to the affected families, which comprised 1,050 people.
The goods were distributed with the help of staff from the offices of Hon. K. Kader Masthan, member of parliament for Wanni District, and Mr. S. Jeyakanthan, divisional secretary for Oddusuttan, Mullaitivu. Capt. S. Sarrajh, president of the IAYSP Sri Lanka, served as project coordinator.
Mullaitivu was similarly affected in 2023 during the same period. At that time also kind donors from Singapore came forward with staple food donations that were distributed to devastated families in Puthikuduiruppu, Mullaitivu District, in January 2024.
On both occasions, affected families were moved by the global community's kindness and support at a time of crisis.
