Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – A 30-member delegation from UPF-Asia Pacific, led by Hon. Ek Nath Dhakal, chairman of UPF and the International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace (IAPP) Asia Pacific, paid a courtesy visit to the Parliament of Malaysia on July 2, 2024. The delegation was received by Tan Sri Dato’ Johari bin Abdul, speaker of the House of Representatives, and ten members from the House and Senate, in the auditorium of the Parliament.
The speaker warmly welcomed the delegation, emphasizing the crucial role of international organizations like UPF in promoting peace and cooperation in the Asia Pacific region. Hon. Ek Nath Dhakal gave a presentation on UPF’s proposal for an Asia Pacific Union, aimed at fostering regional collaboration and peace-building efforts.
Asst. Prof. Sudesh G. Balasubramaniam, president of UPF-Malaysia, reported on his peace-building efforts in the country. Representatives from South Korea and Japan – Hon. Young Ho Lee, former member of the South Korean National Assembly; Dr. Seog Jin Kim, senior advisor of UPF-Korea; and Mr. Masaichi Hori, co-chair of UPF-Asia Pacific – shared their greetings, highlighting the significance of parliamentary cooperation in fostering mutual understanding and shared prosperity.
The visit concluded with a guided tour of Parliament, providing the group with a deeper understanding of Malaysia's legislative processes and historical significance. The courtesy visit was a testament to UPF’s shared commitment with Malaysian parliamentarians to fostering peace and cooperation in the Asia Pacific region.
