Vavuniya, Sri Lanka—To mark the UN International Day of Education 2023, UPF-Sri Lanka, with support from the Religious Youth Service (RYS) and International Association of Youth and Students for Peace (IAYSP), an affiliated organization, held a train-the-trainer “Teachers Workshop” on January 27, 2023 at the Vavuniya Muslim Maha Vidyalaya, a school in Vavuniya in Northern Province, Sri Lanka.
Seventy primary school teachers participated in the program, which focused on “Developing Mental Concepts in Children” and was conducted by the St. John Ambulance Association and Brigade of Sri Lanka, under the patronage of the Vavuniya Zonal Education Department and UN Information Centre in Sri Lanka. Attending the event as special guests were local education officers and school principals.
The chief commissioner of the association, Dr. J.M. Nilam, who is a consultant pediatrician at a children’s hospital in Peradeniya, was the resource person for the workshop. The Vavuniya district commissioner of the association and president of the Sri Lanka chapter of IAYSP, Capt. Sajjidin Sarrajh, gave an overview of the program and talked about the theme of this year’s day, which is “to invest in people, prioritize education.” He also read UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ message for the day.
