The featured speaker was Dr. Tatyana Vshivkova, senior researcher at the Federal Scientific Center for Biodiversity of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. She is also head of the environmental monitoring laboratory at the International Institute of Environment and Tourism at the State Vladivostok University, and president of the scientific and public coordination center "Living Water."
Dr. Vshivkova shared about her work, especially her experience in creating a system for freshwater monitoring through educating volunteers. She discussed with participants the need for protection and the rational use of freshwater ecosystems in the webinar.
Sustainable management of freshwater ecosystems is an integral part of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, as they are essential for human health, environmental sustainability and economic prosperity. Russia ranks second in the world in terms of freshwater reserves. However, the state of fresh waters currently requires more attention and monitoring, as this program made clear.
